1. Global Subscription Models Surge, Bringing Challenges and Opportunities
RetailX’s SubscriptionX 2025 report notes simplified consumer habits are fueling the global rise of subscriptions. In streaming, Asia-Pacific, led by India (Netflix’s second-largest market for new users in 2024), will drive growth over five years. In Europe, multi-subscriptions are standard, with consumers spending €696 annually on apps and services, averaging 3.2 subscriptions. By 2026, 86 million Europeans are expected to subscribe to Netflix. However, 60% of consumers dislike managing multiple subscriptions, spurring “super bundling” services. Deloitte predicts a 2025 decline in standalone streaming “stacking.” Subscriptions may expand to used cars and lodging, urging online retailers to adapt to evolving habits for global market success.
2. China’s Ministry of Commerce: China-ASEAN FTA 3.0 to Create Inclusive, Modern Trade Agreement
China and ASEAN’s ten nations completed China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 negotiations, per the Ministry of Commerce. The 3.0 version will be inclusive, modern, comprehensive, and mutually beneficial, featuring nine new chapters: digital economy, green economy, supply chain connectivity, technical standards, customs facilitation, health measures, competition, SMEs, and economic cooperation. This deepens regional economic integration, fostering supply chain fusion with pioneering significance. Both sides aim to finalize domestic approvals for a formal signing by year-end.
3.EU Plans Uniform Fees for Online-Ordered Small Parcels
On May 21, the EU announced plans to impose uniform handling fees on low-value e-commerce parcels from non-EU countries. Direct-to-consumer parcels will incur a €2 fee, while those sent to EU warehouses face €0.5. E-commerce platforms will bear these costs to offset customs processing expenses, not as tariffs. The fees are interim until the EU’s 2026 tariff reform eliminates the €150 duty-free threshold for small parcels.
4. Tmall 618: Nearly 1 Million Merchants Join Overseas Pavilion
As of May 21, nearly 1 million merchants have enrolled in Tmall’s 618 Overseas Pavilion, a record high. From May 16-19, over 50,000 merchants in the “Taobao Tmall Global Growth Plan” doubled their overseas sales compared to last year’s first three days. Since the May 13 pre-sale, 11 categories—beauty, sports shoes, diapers, and milk powder—saw cross-border sales double year-over-year.
5. Shopify Upgrades Inventory Transfer Feature
On May 21, Shopify enhanced its inventory transfer feature, enabling multi-batch shipments per transfer with precise tracking. New capabilities include customizable transfer page views, multi-batch shipment tracking, seamless Shopify POS integration for store receipt, barcode scanning for efficiency, CSV bulk imports, and API-enhanced third-party management.
