2. Japan Considers Consumption Tax on Low-Price Imported Goods
On May 16, Japan’s Finance Ministry proposed a consumption tax on imported goods under ¥10,000 (~465 RMB) to counter the rapid growth of Chinese e-commerce platforms. In 2024, Japan imported 170 million low-price items worth ¥425.8 billion, a fivefold increase in five years, driven by platforms like Temu and SHEIN. The tax, set for 2026, requires platforms to register and collect taxes while maintaining current tariff exemptions.
3. Philippines to Launch Mandatory “Trust Mark” to Curb E-commerce Fraud
Philippine media reports that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will soon release guidelines for a mandatory e-commerce “Trust Mark” to boost consumer confidence and curb fraud. On May 10, DTI began collecting feedback on the draft order, with comments due by May 16. Minister Cristina Roque stated the Trust Mark certifies reliable products and compliance with standards. Applicants must submit forms and swear compliance with laws. DTI emphasizes the Trust Mark’s role in fostering trust, safety, and fair digital trade.
4. Amazon Introduces “Shoppable Collages” Feature, Creators Generate Content in 3 Steps
Amazon launched Shoppable Collages, enabling influencers and creators to design in-app collage images with product links. The process—select template, add products, adjust design—takes three steps. Supporting themes like fashion and home decor, it boosts order values. Collages sync to Instagram and TikTok with Amazon tracking links, driving off-platform traffic and conversions. This lowers content creation barriers, empowering sellers with visual marketing.
5. EU Claims TikTok May Violate Digital Services Act Ad Rules, TikTok Responds
The EU Commission stated on May 15 that TikTok’s ad library and disclosure practices may breach the Digital Services Act (DSA), particularly in ad transparency, per the EU-China Chamber of Commerce. The finding, a formal notice of compliance issues, is not final. If confirmed, TikTok could face fines up to 6% of its global revenue. TikTok responded, saying it is reviewing the findings and remains committed to DSA compliance.
